Seems like Van Gogh was an awful chancer

Appears that he lost his ear in a fight outside a brothel and then decided to cover up for Gaugin:

Vincent van Gogh did not cut off his own ear but lost it in a fight with fellow artist Paul Gauguin in a row outside a brothel, it has been claimed.

So he spun out a whole saga about a tortured artist:
