    Maggie: 30 years ago today...

It was on this day 30 years ago, May 4th 1979, that Margaret Thatcher became British Prime Minister. Thus began the destruction of heavy industry, the culture of low-pay service McJobs, and the cult of laissez-faire deregulation that led directly, after spreading across the English-speaking world, to the sh1tstorm we are experiencing now. She was right about some things too, some Unions were behaving like thugs and needed to be faced down. But it went too far.

    Andrew Marr on that time:

BBC Parliament is showing the coverage of that particular 1979 election night all day tomorrow. A significant day in British political history.

Thanks for that, I might dip in to it tomorrow when I'm home.

Here's the BBC opening titles (very late 70s!) and opening analysis on the Beeb that night:

The main coverage starts from 9 in the morning I think, the afternoon coverage is related to the following morning and day's events.

No, her daughter has said that she suffers from some kind of dementia, she often forgets that Denis died.

I think we had a thread where this was argued over all day once, let's not go there again.

There was a very good series of programmes about Thatcher and Thatcherism on BBC4 fairly recently, 'The Thatcher Years'.

It's a pity that she's not able to be confronted about the legacy of her policies.
