    British genocide in India

"(The Indian Mutiny) of 1857 was the world's first holocaust, resulting in the loss of an estimated 10 million Indians", stated Indian historian Amaresh Mitra.

The British reprisals after the Indian Mutiny were known as the "devil's wind".

British labour force records show a vast drop in numbers in the decade after 1857.

Charles Dickens talked of wishing to "do my utmost do exterminate the (Indian) race."

    Re: British genocide in India

Cromwells repression in Ireland was over two hundrerd years before. What would the difference be between the Devils Wind and that? Notwithstanding the brutality of the British response to the Mutiny and in no way excusing it, armies have been reponsible for that sort of carry on for millenia. Roman legions razed Carthage and sacked Jerusalem, Genghis Khan destroyed any city which even thought about resisting his will. The British response in any case wasn't systematic like the Nazi holocaust. In fact, its undisciplined nature make it all the more chilling, people were hung or shot or even blown from cannons on a whim sometimes. An army geared up for revenge and told countless stories of the rape and murder of British women in the mutiny reaped a whirlwind.

So no, it wasn't the first holocaust and though it perhaps may be comparable in numbers and brutality to an actual genocide, doesn't appear to have been one - at least under my understanding of the word.

If I posted a similar sentiment regarding the Jewish holocaust, showing insensitivity and claimed it was anti German, I'd be called an extremist and probably be banned.
