    Michael Collins & The Economy

I wasn't sure which forum this should go in, but as it has to do with "The Big Fellow" I decided to put it in the history forum.

I'm just after finishing reading a book on the man, and a point that was made in it was about his economic outlook for Ireland, his vision was that Ireland would have become a federal state that would have been broken down into 4 federal states each province being one.

Each federal area would have set their own economic terms, each area would have been interdependent on each other but at the same time in competition with one another to get the best investment from abroad and within Ireland.

That is about the outline of it, I found it an interesting concept, would be interested to hear what people think.
By 2020, 12.75Lts of petrol will cost you just under €30, today it will cost you €16.42 exactly.

Sounds somewhat similar to Éire Nua, PSF's old plan, which is still in use by RSF.

It does sound similar alright, however do you think that it would have been a good policy if it had been enacted at the foundation of the state?

You shouldn`t believe everything you read. If you did then you wouldn`t be a member of fine gael.

I'm not quite sure. Considering modern standards of local government, I wouldn't be too hopeful. As well as that, if provinces were to compete, there would necessarily be a loser. I don't, to be honest, imagine that Dublin would lose all that much. It's an interesting idea, though.

    *has a think*

Don't know whether it's true, but it would have been unworkable, Connacht would have sunk.

Welcome to P.ie, but lets not make this about FG/FF, this is an interesting question I think, what do people think would be the benefits/negatives if this happened, or what would Ireland be like today if it had happened since the foundation of the state?

Perhaps, but it may have benefitted a city like Galway, and it may have helped the province to have local Government.

Read the header and thought that tax-evading FF'r TD from Limerick was sticking his head above the parapet, if he came back Bertie would have hope.
