I hope they put that on the flysheet.

I can't believe Richard Aldous is head of history at UCD, is that true?
Aldous is head of history at UCD. He is an excellent lecturer and a very capable academic. He does not lecture on Irish History though! I would imagine that he was approached to put his name to this book and it was a good money spinner. I have glanced at the book and don't rate it in the slightest. However, you can't blame the guy for taking the cash - best seller at Christmas I think, he will have pocketed a bit.
Hes head of history at an Irish University and doesn't lecture on Irish History? Anyone else notice a problem there?[/quote:trbc39ns]

There is no problem. He is head of the School of History and Archives. It is an administrative role. He isn't the Professor of Irish History. Do you feel that only an Irish person can provide adequate insight into the academic and other management of a University Department?

No. UCD teaches many types of History why should only the few who teach Irish Histroy be allowed to become head of the department.[/quote:21m3e8oy]

I never said that anyone should be anything, i just asked. I assumed it was the IRISH history section he was head of considering the book he penned. I was querying why he didn't lecture in it considering he wrote a book on the subject

I have the book here. It seems quite good

They rarely do at the time. In a manner similar to the constant refrains that morals are slipping, rhetoric was always better in the past.

Following on from the Great Speeches book Aldous and Niamh Puirséil (also UCD) have published a collection of documents under the title 'Notes from a Contested Island'. It ranges from the 16th century to the GFA. Fintan O'Toole introduces.

Notes from a contested island - The Irish Times - Sat, Oct 25, 2008
"The thing that always annoyed me about traditional Irish historiography was the paradox of its Anglocentrism. People are now prepared, I think, to confront the possibility that many Irish problems are, in a sense, indigenous to the Irish situation." Roy Foster (1989).
