But people claim the new testament is accurate because they can find some references to events, places and cultural practises that happened around that time. It is their only "independent reference" that proves (to them) that the bible is a historical document and so everything within must be true.

Irish mythology has similar references to places and events that there is historical evidence for, therefore, Irish mythology must be a historical source and CuChulain must have been a real person.

Actual morality is doing what is right regardless of what you're told. Religious morality is doing what you're told, regardless of if it's right.

But we can date, from linguistic, cultural, and historical reference to them, the gospels to within one hundred years of jesus's life. We cannot do such with the life of cú chulainn within 800 years of when he is reputed to have lived.

But much more unreliable than the four gospels, which are also backed up by Roman and jewish sources. Btw this has nothing to do with the Lebor Gabála, which makes no reference to Cú Chulainn.

In my opinion, I think they accidentally stumbled upon the truth. The Lebor Gabála refers to spain, as Espáne, clearly deriviative of the latin Hispania. However, had their been a tradition of origin passed down from generation to generation, the name would not have been in Latin, but in the original proto-Gaelic. Lack of maps would ensure that people would be geographically unaware of the exact places involved. The book of invasions was merely an attempt to ground the mythological origins of the Irish people into geographical fact and pseudo-historical fact. If we extend it further, we find the Gaels in egypt, then as one of lost tribes of Israel and then in Greece as one of the scythians. It was merely pseudo-scholastic origin legend.

I think you might br wrong there. The English or Angles are of north european stock; blondie, blue-eyed boys.

The Irish are of south european/north african stock; dark haired and dark eyed.

I'm a mix; Tall slim blondie with almost black eyes.
Handsome devil, if I may say so myself.

You may be a hunk but it's most probably not from a supposed Anglo Saxon ancestry.

Modern genetic study of the y chromosome can show a population's paternal lines going right back to the original “Y-Chromosome Adam” who lived in Africa 60,000 – 80,000 years ago.

Over time different populations develop distinct mutations which allow the ancient paternity of modern day populations to be traced.

One such mutation occurred in the homeland of the "Anglo Saxons" called the I1c haplogroup. This contour map shows the modern distribution of this haplogroup and surprisingly there are more "Anglo Saxon" paternal lines in Moldova/Ukraine than there are in Britain.

Less than 5% of the overall modern population of Britain have Anglo Saxon ancient paternity, rising to around 15% in Norfolk where they landed originally. 75% of the paternal lines in modern Britain originated in the Basque region.

The English are nearly all dark haired, brown-eyed. Don't forget the "English" came from Belgium! and are well-mixed with others.

Look at Westlife, look at Robbie and Roy Keane, look at Boyzone, look at Shay Given, Dunne of Man City, etc. Dark/fair hair, blue eyes.

Practically all people from Cork are dark/fair haired, blue-eyed. Both my parents were (my mother actually looked a bit like the queen of England! - hardly suprising sine the queen's mother was of Gaelic stock).

Honestly, joel, you are bordering on racial profiling here. I'm dark hair with green eyes, should I be deported? All red heads have brown eyes, where does that fit in?

    No - I was half-joking. That anti-Irish Hiker fancies himself an "anglo-saxon"!

Obviously, I am generalising here! (But ALL Redheads do NOT have brown eyes!).
