1901 and 1911 census data coming online soon.

The 1901 and 1911 Census of Ireland are undergoing a digitisation project by The National Archives and will be available electronically, beginning with the 1911 Dublin returns from 'Autumn 2007'. So presumably in the next month or so.

This is a huge and significant resource of information, made even more special by the fact that the 1821, 1831, 1841 and 1851 were destroyed in an explosion and subsequent fire at The Four Courts in 1922. Also, the 1861 ,1871, 1881, and 1891 records were intentionally destroyed. Not sure by whom.

And due to the '100 year rule', the next census we will have free access to will be the 1931 in 2031, as there was none taken in 1921. I think.

I'm really looking forward to this - there's loads I want to find out, but not motivated enough to use the existing microfilm method.

The on-lining of the UK census data has proved to be very popular.

BTW, the document of the month is always worth a peek on the same website.

I'm not really sure Stretch. It seems to have gotten carried over here because it did apply for England and Wales. I don't know if it is statutory or not. Sorry for the non-answer.

yeh, members of the ric and the police auxiliary cadets attempted to carry one out from door-to-door but were frustrated in their efforts by lawless elements. their propensity to kill residents on sight also made the returned forms somewhat unreliable.

the only areas successfully recorded were the pembroke electoral district in dublin and kingstown. there were huge gaps in the returns. especially in kerry, west cork, limerick, south tipperary and west waterford.

This is great news, have been trying to research my family tree for years but haven't had the spare time to go to the local library for the census data.

The Public Record Office was badly damaged during the Civil War which meant earlier censuses were destroyed

Basically, the 100 year rule prohibits the census being made public for a period of 100 years after it was taken. Given this, we should have access to the 1901 census but not the 1911 census. Because so many other records were destroyed in the Four Courts siege, the government waived the 100 year rule for the 1911 census meaning that it is already accessible to the public. If they had not done so we would not be able to have access to the 1911 census until 2011..

All in all, this is great news that we will shortly be able to access records online. It will make the researching of family histories far easier.

Such a shame. So much information lost. Not to mention the medieval documents that were also destroyed.

I know ye're all dying to know if there's any skeletons in the family's historical closet.

It's still not online, but I emailed the archivist this afternoon so will hopefully find out when it is launched for definite.

    Here's a sweetner:

Census return of Edward (Eamonn) DeValera Sunday night, 2nd April, 1911.
