The Arab Spring Vs Fall Of Communism in E. Europe

In my view and I am not any expert just an interested onlooker with an affection for Arab people, the Arab Spring has been a failure! I was born during the cold war and was 21 at the time of the Berlin Wall, which saw the death knell of Stallinism in E. Europe, something I was convinced would never happen in my lifetime!
How did one succeed in ending tyranny while the other sees Arab people still living under despots!
Could it be the dictatorships that many Arab people live under are worse than those were of Stallinist Europe, even with the likes of the Stasi watching everyone in such a paranoid way!
Or are their vested interests wanting to keep Arab people subjugated!

Could it be that Arab countries need a dictator to curb the influence of the Islamic clerics ?

Why do you think they cannot govern themselves?

The problem is, most North African countries are not traditional states and are constructs of empire. When they are left to organise themselves politically, it is difficult to draw solidarity to create a stable nation state. This wasn't the case in the Soviet Block. Also, the backward religious dogma's that plague the Middle East inhibit progressive ideas on how to consolidate the territories.

The Arab dictactorships are very similar to the former socialist ones. Not by coincidence either as their secret police were trained by the Stasi and Russians. Their leaders also tried to ape the cult of the personality, hence the absurdity of Assad and Hussein wearing 1950s suits and hats! They also are or were a lot more vicious than the Stalinist states were in the decade or so before they collapsed in the 1980s.

Funnily enough I thought Stalin died in 1953 and his legacy was then renounced by Khrushchev. But then again you think Stalin was personally controlling the IRA in the 1960s. Your conspiracy theories are great craic in fairness.

The most brutal Arab dictatorship is Saudi Arabia, which is also a crucial ally of the west. No one mentions this though.

The population of Eastern Europe was educated and rational and not obsessed with religion and tribal politics.

The revolutionaries in the Middle East think the answer to everything is to shout "Allahu Akbar!" and blow sh*t up.

Stalinism was a system that survived Stalin. It became less vicious as his inheritors became more interested in their bank accounts rather than ideology.

The only choice in these Arab countries does seem to be between a crazy dictator who operates on the basis of getting the backing of one tribe from the mix in most of these countries AND some bunch of crazies who operate on the basis that their religion has to be followed to the letter.

There doesn't seem to be a lot in between the 2 extremes.
