I'd help out except that it is 22 years since I last did mediaeval history and even then the last bit I did was on Montaillou! I keep meaning to get back to reading it. It fascinated me, but I got stuck into 19th century and 20th century history, though Margaret MacCurtain used to try to get me to return to the mediaeval stuff.

That's always been the one I loved. In modern history one has to filter through massive amounts of material to find the truly surreal, in medieval you open the book and there it is. I also find it interesting to reconstruct an extinct society, as opposed to merely regressing the modern one.

It is believed by many to have been somewhere in the Carolinas, though this is contested as the location of 'Vinland' itself hasnt even been properly identified. Referred to in a couple of the Icelandic Sagas.
