According to some historical sources, there was a female Pope (known as Pope Joan) in either the 800's or 1000's. Supposedly, she reigned as Pope John (possibly John VIII), and fooled people into thinking she was a man. Her cover is supposed to have been blown while on procession in Rome when she suddenly started giving birth to a child, after which some sources suggest a mob beat her to death. Is this story fact or fiction? The Church since the 17th century has denied it ever happened, but is this just another Church cover-up? And is it true that the street where this was supposed to have happened was avoided by the Church for centuries later, and that there had been a statue of Pope Joan that was destroyed as part of the cover-up?
