Planes loaded with paratroopers would have been taking flight from a number of airstrips in southeast England. Engines roaring into the night sky headed to Normandy.

Not true that the sherman was markedly inferior to the panzer iv so far as I know. I remember reading that the Germans got a real shock when they encountered Shermans for the first time in the Egyptian desert.

People rave about the superior German tanks but in reality the Germans could never build these tanks in sufficient numbers. The production rate of tigers was only 2 per day which was grossly pathetic. I read somewhere that by late 1944 many US infantry divisions had more tanks than a full strength panzer division and there were virtually no full strength panzer divisions in late 1944. The soviets and americans built their tanks in enormous numbers.

To listen to all the nazi and communist apologists on this site no one was ever deliberately killed by their heroes, it was all just a little misunderstanding!

the holocaust is well documented, there is real concrete evidence, mass graves, witness testimony, survival stories, death camps were found virtually intact, often liberated by communist forces who paid a massive price in lost lives so to do. The Germans left behind inventories, plans, even down to dockets for victims' possession, there were companies formed with business models to transport large numbers of people on one way journeys. The Stalin as Hitler myth, the communism the same as Nazis propaganda is just that. After the war the Soviet Union and the rest of communist europe became reasonably pleasant places to live. There was housing, education, healhtcare, sanitation, entertainment, work with pay and holiday entitlements. They were not mass extermination camps and if they had been built on such a philosophy there was virtually no evidence of it in the well structured and stable societies that transformed themselves into modern democracies in the late 80's.

The fact is that millions of people are dying across the world from preventable diseases in a world where communism is almost extinct. Are those people the victims of capitalism, are our world leaders as responsible as Stalin for these deaths on the basis that it is their economic models and philosophies which are failing people and leading to such catastrophe.
The Nazi final solution was of a different order, it was a deliberate planned and organised act of mass murder and genocide, on a scale never before or since witnessed.

And the first of the British glider-borne troops from D Company, 2nd Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry would land at Pegasus Bridge on the Orne River a few minutes before midnight making them the first troops to land on occupied Europe. Eisenhower later described the achievement in landing within 20 yards of the bridge as "the finest piece of pure flying of the entire war".

    No, pretty well matched really.

I remember reading that the Germans got a real shock when they encountered Shermans for the first time in the Egyptian desert.
Mainly because they'd only met early-war British tanks up to that point, and they were almost universally rubbish to be frank. Britain dropped the ball on tank design after WW1 and didn't pick it up again until they produced the Comet in late '44, or more convincingly the Centurion a few years later.

They didn't earn the "Greatest Generation" title the easy way that's for sure, we could do with some of their resolve today in a number of areas around the world.

I liked one of your posts earlier on in the thread it was quite good and reasonable but this stuff about Uncle Joe is off the scale mate.

I suggest you and MacBeth move to Cuba or if thats not to your liking build a time machine and head back to the good old USSR which i hear was a reasonably pleasant place to live.
