    Victorian death photos

One of the odder aspects of how Victorians coped with death was their tendency to take photos of the dead - sometimes with the corpse placed in a group shot of the other children or parents or relatives.

    Below is some examples.

"Irish citizens . . . on ratification of the Treaty could be forced to become Euro soldiers." Sinn Féin claim on Maastricht in 'Democracy or Dependency' p.6. in 1992.

The music is beautiful though. Do you know who it is?

    Thanks.

Actually there's something quite moving about that montage, both the images and the music. I retract my initial judgement.

A lot less shocking than the inclination that some people have today to record extreme suffering or death of people on their mobile phones etc.
The Mahon Tribunal found Olivia Mitchell to have received an inappropriate payment from Frank Dunlop at the time of the 1992 Election. F.G. Gael has taken no action against her.

Jesus Tommy, now I'm too scared to go out and check that noise on the landing---a sort of dragging sound accompanied by human sighing. I'm gonna stay here on P.ie....

The Victorians made a fetish of death, inspired perhaps by Queen Victoria who mourned her beloved husband Prince Albert to an almost ghoulish extent....

There is a terrifying, brilliant film, The Others, starring Nicole Kidman and Finnuala Flanagan, which deals with this issue...

I'm way too scared to google it.....

Did you watch the video above GG?

Don't be frightened, it's actually very powerful.

You're a big girl now, gatsbygirl! Stop being scared of the bump in the night! Early or unexpected death were common among even as the montage shows, wealthy people. If in London, go to Highgrove Cemetary and see the necropolis. Such tombs!

    LOOK OUT BEHIND YOU!!!!!!!!

Thanks for that memento mori, Tommy.

Yes, I know it's supposed to be sad and poignant and moving, and it's beautifully put together, but....

It's just too much, too ghoulish, .....it evokes memories, terrors, anxieties in those of us who are susceptible....

I absolutely love visiting graveyards. All human history is there. I've been to many cemetries in London, and cannot visit Paris without a trip to Pere Lachaise...

What is amazing is the way the middle and upper classes also lost children at an early age, and young mothers in childbirth.

Early death was not just an affliction of the poor.

Queen Victoria herself lost children to typhoid.....

    But still.......it's a bit late....owls shrieking.....footsteps round the house..
