    India - Ireland historical links

January 26 is Republic Day in India.

The historical links between the world's largest republic and Ireland are profound.

    India

These historical political connections were instrumental in shaping India's constitutional framework. They are well remembered still in India but are less well known than they might be in Ireland I think. Perhaps Leo Varadkar, our first Minister to have immediate family roots in India, will help reawaken our memory of the contribution our then young republic made to the shaping of today's India.

Agree. We need to build ties with India rather than constantly chasing the Chinese Yuan. India is a free market democracy and because of this will be the superpower of the future.

India is a highly protected economy certainly not free market as we would know it.
    It is hugely corrupt.
    Huge issues with political stability.
Has higher rates of infant malnutrition than sub-Saharan Africa.
And has a bloody space program…..

That is now. Medium to long term it will bet a lot better.

Ireland needs to buld ties with every country it can. China and India yes, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Bolivia, Russia, Germany, Poland, Finland, Norway, Japan, Thailand and everywhere else as well.

Ireland needs to stop putting all its eggs in one basket and use all the baskets.

I would suggest doing business with India before voicing that opinion.

Even before both states were independent they shared a very sorrowful and profound link

Not to forget Moosajee Bhamjee - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, who though originally South African, is also of Indian descent.

Best campaign slogan ever I believe.

Correct. The Americans need to know this too. I cannot fathom why they are cozying up to the regime in Pakistan whilst effectively ignoring the world's largest democracy.

A relic of the Cold War when India was chair of the Non-Alligned Countries which America took to mean pro-communist. I think that America has grown away from that posture now.
The Irish are not a serious people. Colm McCarthy to Miriam O'Callaghan.
