[Req] Recommended Reading on Irish Planning Corruption

    Hi All,

I’m looking to read up on all matters relating to Irish planning corruption (eg Liam Lawlor, Ray Burke etc etc), as I don’t fully understand what exactly happened/is happening from media reports.Has anyone written a book on the subject that’s straightforward enough for Joe Soaps to understand? If yes, can you send me details (and possibly a short review if you have read it)?

(Please note, I’m not looking for Tribunal texts)

    Thanks in Advance

Frank MacDonald's two books The Destruction of Dublin and the Construction of Dublin are probably the best introductions to the broader issue, they don't deal as much with the tribunals but they explain why Dublin is in the mess it is. The former was withdrawn due to legal action but their are a lot of copies in circulation second hand and in some libraries.

I know you don't want to plow through the tribunal reports but there are brief summaries inculded in them which are quite straightforward - useful if only to check the other reports or accounts you read.

I would also recommend any Fianna Fail frontbench or ministers autobiography published in the last 25 yrs.

I think the reason why Irish corruption wasnt much of an issue for Irish people this year is because they dont understand whats going on.

Should that be 'don't understand what's going on'?

With A Little Help From my Friends by PAul Cullen, the Times reporter from the tribunal. A detailed account of the whole lot
We need to radically change every system that has enabled the wholesale destruction of the Irish landscape, rural and urban. There is no time for incremental step by step measures. The systems have failed utterly and the only hope for a real recovery requires the rule book to be torn up completely.

    Do they want to understand?
However, banks know they have a duty of care to their clients and I'm sure that this should prevent them lending irresponsibly.

The Destruction of Dublin is top calls if somewhat dated now, but good for the early years of the construction boom of the 1960's and 1970's.
