Should Holocaust denial be an International crime?

Should all E.U member states/u.s etc embrace this law or should we simply rely on laws against incitement of racial hatred.

I believe we need to have the ability to revise Holocaust figures in order to give a more objective historical view of the atrocity.

No I don't think it should be a crime. Reviewing the events of the Holocaust is an integral part of history as more information becomes available. To outright deny it happened, should not be illegal but is simply an example of total ignorance. Although ignorance is unfortunate, it should not be illegal.

No, people should be free to assert that the sun revolves around the earth for all I care. The laws on incitement to racial hatred (mind you, not sure how robust they are here) should be enough to deal with the more malicious mutterings.

It is, for very good reasons, a crime in Germany.

And yet many Neo-Nazi skinhead thugs who do deny the holocaust never get arrested: I suspect there ain't space enough in Germany's prisons for the number of holocaust deniers there are in that country.

But what about the denial of the Irish famine and the political motivation that lay behind it: should that be made a crime on these islands?

Indeed. People who declare that The Holocaust is a good thing or that such events should be repeated should be dealt with. However, simply to claim that it didn't happen should not be illegal - it just shows one's stupidity.

I know the argument for making a law banning Holocaust Denial is compelling due to the magnitude of the event. However, on a broader basis it sets a precedent to ban people just not accepting historical record. There will always be idiots who will never accept events that happened in history, this doesn't mean that they should be locked up.

What is important is that incitement of hatred laws and racism laws are properly enforced. Rather than attempting to ban ignorance.

You gave yourself away in that last sentence, ephenry.

Holocaust denial is not about revising the precise number of victimes of the holocaust: was it 6,000,000 or 5,999,999? The neo-nazis who try to question the precise figures murdered during the Holocaust have no interest in historical accuracy. They are fascists and anti-semites who believe that if they can sow confusion or doubt about the precise number of victims the awful and unalterable truth of the fact of the Holocaust can be undermined.

You are either one of those who share this warped and diseased mentality or some dumbfock with too much time on his hands.
