Just listening to Gay Byrne on Newstalk talking about the memorial gardens at Islandbridge and how the were, wrongly, left fall into disrepair. He then spoke about how the likes of Tom Crean had to keep their heads down after the Tan War for obvious reasons.
However he then used the opportunity to describe the men who killed Crean's brother, an RIC man, as gangsters. The men involved in his death, along with 2 other RIC men in an ambush, were the same men who fought the brits to a standstill in west Cork, and lost many in the fight for freedom. Of course nobody on Newstalk pulled him up on his slur.

What's your point? You're entitled to see them as glorious patriots and he's entitled to see them as gangsters who killed Irish people who were doing their job maintaining law and order..

What else could you expect from such a horrible little man.
He is out of the limelight now, all he can do to keep his name in the papers is to throw the spanner in now and then. Good riddance.

this is where we are in Ireland. There are people who will argue that there are two traditions and there should be respect.

But people like Gay Byrne will never show respect to one side of those traditions. They'll ask for respect day in day out for the unionist tradition but any respect to the nationalist tradition built on our own culture and identity will always be sneered at.

Gay Byrne is in my opinion displaying his own prejudices and agenda of hate.

Where is the reconciliation in Gay Byrne's comment.
