If you want to tell a lie the best ones should consist of something based on a half truth embellished with a touch of absurdity. In other words confusion. Take for instance the circumstances surrounding Nairac going to The Three Step Inn. He went there we are lead to understand without informing his fellow officers and without communication devices. So he gets there and the lie begins.
First with a half truth he is from Ardoyne. Not true, but he was in it for a time. Followed by the embellishment, he is a “stick” now if you are going to give a story to anyone in South Armagh about who you are if you start that story off with the news that you are a “stick” that's bad enough but one from the Republican heartland of Ardoyne? You are either the stupidest person in the world, or the Universe. There is no other feasible explanation for such an action.
Therefore the motive for such an action must be seen in the context of someone who was reckless in the extreme, or arrogant to the extreme of recklessness.
