    Irish Railway Stations

Came across this document earlier while looking for something else.

    http://www.railbrit.co.uk/Ireland/Irish_railways.pdf

It may be of interest to some people on here. I spent ages leafing through it.

It seems to say a lot about late 20th Century transport policy in that so many stations are now closed / tracks gone.
    Under Review.

I came across it some time ago. It is fascinating.

Did I hear somebody saying today that they are closing the Waterford to Rosslare line?

Without being partisan, its fair to point out that in the six counties, Sinn Féin's Connor Murphy is Minister for Transport, and he has invested in railways up there. There are new trains and the Derry to Belfast line has been invested in, after years of neglect. He deserves credit for this.

RTÉ News: Waterford to Rosslare rail line could close

They're ''considering'' it. Do people not emigrate by boat anymore, then ?

I rarely (and Factual can confirm this) give any credit to SF, but well done here.

No doubt that many if not most of the stations on the list should have been closed but vital rail links should have been preserved, and a few more key stations kept in tact.

indeed it is a tad saddening, as a kid listening to my grandfather talk about the railways and esp. between cork and courtmachserry where we holidayed for generations where for the last three miles the boys could hop off the train run forward and hop back one always made rural railways seem so romantic to me, sadly something i'll never experience

It is sad to see all these closed stations and lines. Abbeydorney, my nearest village heads the list.
But what angers me is the Huge opertunity missed, these lines all had a steady Gradient, unless they were flat. They were in the publics hands and they conected comunities. They were perfect for a national footpath and cycle network. If only we could have had a bit of forsight. Now in many cases its far to late, the land is sold and the wonderfull opertunity lost.

And here is where you can see photos of these stations, or at least what's left of them or where they used to stand.

    Irish Railway Stations Index

Kudos to the trainspotter who runs the site.
