    ^^ Fantastic image.

Dame Street/College Green was my first thought too for some reason. But is there any chance it's Kildare Street? I'm looking at the garage entrance on the far left which may be where the RAC garage is still there today.

But feeling a bit melancholy now.

No doubt about it, the Dublin of that era was not a utopia.

But it had culture , character and charm.

Today we appear to have none of these qualities

Very true, Dublin has lost it's soul also. Consume on.

Nope, it's actually Middle Abbey Street just to the east of Arnotts. The building at the elephant's behind is the western extremity of the old Independent House. You can see the street entrance to the alley which goes down to Princes Street. The building right behind the elephant is the still extant apartment building which also houses the Arnotts Bargain Shop. McCarthy's is still a shop. It used to be where you'd go for popcorn and sweets when the Adelphi (and latterly the Lighthouse) was on the street.

    Memories, eh?

BTW: Check it out yourself on Google Street view.

Nostalgia ain't what it used to be...

    I was a teen in the 1970s/80s...
    Dublin was a kip...
The grime on the buildings, the total lack of colour, run-down tenements, filthy river-side walks, Temple Bar slum....

today's Dublin might not be paradise but its a 1000 times better than 1961.
    Bazinga!
