yes, the idea that a virus might suddenly change is preposterous.

So was 1918 flu at first. As people continue to travel around the world unchecked, more and more infected people will infect others before their symptoms start to affect them.

Every flu kills healthy people, plus loads of older, very young, and sicker people. This one is relatively mild. The OP is right that the Spanish flu started the same way, went away, then came back as a genocidal maniac (it got relatives of mine). But that relies on both a mutation and on the type of mutation. As someone else has pointed out, the medical capabilities in combating such things are vastly superior now, understanding now being many multiples of what it was then. There will be a deadly mass-pandemic one day, it will kill hundreds of thousands of people, it might be this one, then it might not be.

Aw . I guess your also going to tell me that copius amounts of vodka wont kill the germs either ? Still I will persevere with my theory . I owe it to science .

Indeed, in 1918 we didn't even know it was caused by a virus.

Budget Travel explained on Liveline today that they felt it was okay not to inform customers of flu hotspots because that was in accordance with the HSE's "best public health guidelines".
