An relative of mine is on Enbrel an anti-arthritis injection every week-its an expensive drug but he believes the pharmacist gets paid over 1000euro each month for handing him over the box of injections-can this possubly be true? he is on the drug payments scheme

A pharmacist gets refunded the cost of the drug plus a dispensing fee of something like 3 euro with some cents. Your friend is talking rubbish.

I'm not sure your right-for private perscriptions i think they can charge the cost of the drug again but i'd like someone who knows to confirm

Hardly anyone pays privately. Once you pay PRSI you don't pay more than 90 something euro per month. 70% of all medicines dispensed are GMS and paid for in full by the state.

I was crawling through Abbyleix today on the new Cork-Dublin Motorway and Mary Harney said that it was about 60% of a mark-up. The highest in Europe.

I'll take your word for it. She also said that the difference for the generic drug and the patented one was very small, and not worth bothering about.

As far as I know generic drugs can be up in certain circumstances 1/2 the price. There is a big gap and if we swapped over we'd save 10s millions. The big problem is a doctor, who doesn't know the market, writes a prescription. The pharmacist has to dispense it as is. Were there to be some leeway the pharmacist could suggest something cheaper or be given the power in consultation with the HSE to exchange the prescribed drug for something cheaper.

I think you are mixing up DPS and GMS-in the GMS the pharmasict is paid a set price plus dispensing fee but I think the DPS(the 100euro a month) is different and that the goverment hasn't negociated fixed fee for that -is there anyone out there who knows and will tell.....
