Thornton Hall now "not big enough" for new Central Mental Hospital

The Government has decided that Thornton Hall is too small to be used for the new Central Mental Hospital. Unbelievable

"The State paid €30 million for 150 acres in 2005, of which 20 acres were designated for the replacement facility for the Central Mental Hospital, but the Minister said yesterday that it was too small for what was required."

It's only taxpayer's money, plenty more where that came from.

Yeah you're right. Just panicked when I saw the figure first. I forgot who was paying for it.

It was speculated on Newstalk today that the government had engaged in property speculation when over-paying for this land.

Any truth to this, or was it just a case of making a "friend" rich?

Why the hell could they not have decided before buying it that it was too small?

Is it the civil servants or the cabinet who is at fault?

Does this mean another site will have to be bought, probably from another Fianna Fail supporter at a vastly inflated price.

The whole Thorntan Hall deal is incredibly dodgy. The taxpayer was shafted once again just like with e-voting, p-pars, the national aquatic centre and so on.

they have argued for years it was enough

They argued that CMH couldnt stay in dickensian conditions in dundrum, presume this means that the land grabbers are out looking for other space to build a brand spanking new hospital quickfast

(sorry had to stop there pig landed on my lap in 3rd floor building, wonder where he came from)

Decisions of any magnitude are always (ALWAYS) signed off on by Minister. Civil Servants cannot make policy decisions, they can only act to carry out instructions of the Minister and I personally, have never see a scheme or policy set up that hadn't bene run by the Minister office.

let them take the additional 10 acres for the hospital from the prison and build the prison out in the bog near Edenderry. People of Edenderry will be glad of the work coming their way.

Since most of the Scum come from Blanch, Clondalkin and Tallaght a prison just off the M4/M6 will be as convenient for them as one at the far end of Dublin County.
Paying 10 times the market value of bogland is still cheaper than paying 10 times the value of agricultural land in north Dublin.
Precedent: Prisons have been built in bog areas before. All those british prisons which end with xxxxmoor. What's a moor again?

but really it's a budget issue; Govt. has no money so size of site being too small is a good excuse not to build desperately needed resource and saves them from doing anything for a few years while in the meantime patients suffer.
