Fine Gael and Labour table a Dáil motion to seek Shine inquiry

[COLOR=black][FONT=Times New Roman][COLOR=black][FONT=Verdana][SIZE=2]Fine Gael and the Labour Party have joined forces to demand an inquiry into the sexual abuse allegations against former hospital consultant Michael Shine.

Dr Shine was found not guilty during a court case in October 2003 after a number of men accused him of abusing them while they were teenage patients at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda.

It is disgraceful that the Opposition must go to these lengths to get justice for the victims of Dr. Shine. One would have thought that the Government would have learned the lessons of the Ryan report.

    Alas no.

It appears Mr Shine could do no wrong and he appeared to have many many friends in the Garda Siochana, people who were prepared to pervert the course of justice and may well have.

Three men who allege they were sexually assaulted as boys by Michael Shine, the retired Drogheda hospital consultant, have separately claimed that gardai ignored their original complaints. The men’s comments follow the Murphy report’s criticism of senior gardai in Dublin’s Catholic archdiocese for failing to investigate complaints against the clergy.

One man, a former seminarian, claimed he twice attempted to file a formal complaint against Shine in two garda stations but was advised to drop it each time. “I went to garda stations in two different counties in 1989 and early 1990 and reported I was abused in the late 1970s. In the first station, I was told I was slandering a good man who was highly respected by everybody, including the church. In the second station, the guard I spoke to said, ‘that’s the surgeon in Drogheda’, when I said Shine’s name. Then he shoved his fist in front of my face and said, ‘shut up or you’ll get some of this’. ”
