"The cuts to Crumlin are grotesque, and the minister's defence Orwellian". John Crown

Writing in the Irish Mail to-day consultant oncologist John Crown lashes the callous and mis-leading Health Minister,Mary Harney.
Harney recently told the Daíl that the root cause of the ward and operating theatre closures at Our Lady's Hospital for Sick Children,Crumlin, was overstaffing.
This is not true states Crown.
Crumlin managed to stay within it's strapped 2008 budgeted allocation.Staff numbers decreased by 70.
The 2009 allocation was reduced by 4%.
Comparing staff levels between Crumlin and Birmingham Children's Hospital.
Crumlin :1600 staff for 247 beds.
Birmingham: 3,000 staff for 220 beds.

    Crown asks.
"So,please tell me how, despite increased activity, decreased staff, and a spend that was within the previous years allocation,Minister Harney can have the gall to tell Crumlin that the curtailment of it's services was due to excess staff, and was not caused by her decision to reduce it's budget."

Harney and the spin culture that surrounds her is surely unravelling.

If you cut staff this year in half, and then increase it next year by 10%, you can show what a great job the government is doing by increasing much needed services, much more than is being done in the UK.

Boot production quota has exceeded expectations!

How representative is Birmingham? What are the staffing numbers and beds for other childrens' hospitals?

Googling "Children's hospitals, staffing statistics" came up with 284 beds and 839 staff quoted for a Denver,US children's hospital. Maybe Denver has too many beds?

Looks like Crumlin is very understaffed, assuming the Crumlin and Birmingham staffing numbers are for total staff, not just medical staff.

    Ask Mary.
By what percentage was the admin staff reduced when all the healthboards were amalgamated?
By what percentage did the number of senior grade management levels go up by post amalgamation?

why are we comparing ourselves to britian?????

britian regularly ranks second lowest (guess who ranks lowest) in medical/health care indices! we should be comparing ourselves to denmark, belgium, netherlands etc.

edit...and very good questions JPC. ones that need answering but do not hold out hope.
