Central Mental Hospital pulls down the shutters: don't call us we'll call you

From next Monday week the Central Mental Hospital will stop accepting new admissions. They say they have 25 nurse vacancies that cannot be filled because of a hiring embargo.

The HSE managers who manage managers say they are thinking about this.

Only the tip of the iceberg as yet...I know a lot of hospital service plans have not been "finalised" with the hse....no doubt after tomorrow they will be......we WILL have a lot of bed closures in every hospital....we were all put to the pin of our collars to come in ON budget last year which meant everything was cut as close to the bone as possible....the only other cuts left are the patients!!!!

This is going to end in tragedy, it's not a matter of if, but when. Let's not turn this into a political issue. For fuc*s sake a report just a few weeks ago told us that the lack of adequate mental health services led to a man taking his life and the lives of his family, has this country gone totally mad!

I was under the impression that it was more than that, almost 25, can anyone verify that?

this past number of years , its been almost impossible for someone to be commited to an institution against thier will , several times a year we hear of someone having stabbed someone to death because they thought thier victim was the devil , napoleon etc , the tripple murderer brendan o donnell was a ticking time bomb , he was notorious in his community for year years , baschically nothing is done untill the crazy person commits a crime and then its the problem of an garda siochanna , while the problem might be lack of funds right now , before it was mainly down to political correctness and the care in the community ****************************************

i expect a backlash from the psychiatricsts in here but i have a relation who needs to be in some kind of institution and his family have been categorically told that nothing can be done unless he hurts someone seriously

I expect you're right. With the public finances vanishing, the money simply isn't there. So, indeed, I expect that means services will need to be reduced. Realistically, those reductions will only be reversed when wages and other prices fall.

Which I don't doubt SIPTU will do their best to frustrate.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the Central Mental Hospital basically for people found guilty of crimes, but insane? Would it be used in cases such as you suggest?

I mean, I know there's a massive desire to overplay every news story, and any attempt to actually get to the root of what's being said will be avoided. But aren't you talking complete bollocks, here, basically?

Just to clarify, as well, is anyone apart from SIPTU expressing concern about this?

Again, if there's a problem there's a problem. Its just so much hyperventilation goes on in the health sector that every episode of shroud waving has to be subjected to scrutiny.
However, banks know they have a duty of care to their clients and I'm sure that this should prevent them lending irresponsibly.
