Ógra Shinn Féin Demand meeting with Taoiseach

Suicide Prevention - An All Ireland Approach!

Ógra Shinn Féin have written to An Taoiseach Bertie Ahern demanding a meeting regarding the issue of suicide prevention.
The youth group have also written to minister for health and Children, Mary Harney TD and British Direct rule minister Responsible for health Paul Goggins MP requesting similar meetings. The meetings will be a part of their suicide prevention campaign which was launched at the Ógra Shinn Féin national congress in February.

Spokesperson for Ógra Shinn Féin, Andrea O’Kane said “The issue of people taking their own lives or attempting to take their on lives here in Ireland needs to be addressed in a common sense approach. We believe this can be best achieved by an all Ireland strategy to suicide prevention. We hope to put our points to the two ministers as well to An Taoiseach Bertie Ahern in the coming months.”

"Suicide exacts an enormous toll upon communities right across Ireland. Our nation loses hundreds of lives to this tragedy each year, and many more receive emergency treatment care after attempting to take their own lives through self-harm.

We demand the creation and implementation of an effective all-Ireland suicide prevention strategy. We also call upon the British and Irish governments to take immediate steps towards implementing a national strategy that will promote an integrated, fully resourced, and holistic prevention strategy across all 32 counties of our nation. So that these tragic and preventable deaths become less common and hopefully a thing of the past."

How long would it take to put such points to the Taoiseach?

All their site talks about are "National Days of Action" demanding the formulation of an island-wide strategy. Doesn't say anything else.

While an island wide strategy? Instead of geographics prehaps it should be focused on demographics such as rural/urban, rich/poor, education/post-education.
It would seem to fit more into the sociological approach to suicide.

Has it ever dawned on you that OSF may have a genuine interest in this issue?

Every time I read an OSF press release on this issue, the name Bernard Dorrian comes to mind.

I just think its a bit rich

A worthy cause. Just interesting to note how over the past few weeks though said organisation has been singing the praises of people who committed suicide in 1981.

Great to see OSF highlighting this important issue.

A more unequal, less cohesive society must be to blame.

Ireland has gone after economic growh but neglected equality and inclusion, and a lot of people, at the bottom rung in wealth terms, are driven to despair.

Your sanctimonious Mary Lou-esque waffle would drive anyone to despair

Ógra Shinn Féin has no credibility what so ever.
