Signing off college, signing on the dole

Third level students will be finishing college in the next month, no doubt some will emigrate, a small percentage will find work, any guess as to how many students are graduating this year and how many will be signing on? Will it mean that June will will have a big hike in the live register figures ?

    FF have a plan.

An agency, called the National Graduate Management Agency (NGMA), is being set up.

NGMA will operate under the NTMA.

The NGMA will take the underperforming graduates and hope to extract some value from them over the next 20 years.

Of course there'll be a hike...and thats just another reason why the Live Register is a completely innacurate portrayal of the level of unemployent in this country.

I wouldn't worry too much about graduates signing on...I think it's safe to say that after doing up to 4 years of a degree that they can be seen as signing on for the shortest period of time. The likelihood is that they'll emigrate after a summer on the dole.

I'm finished college the past two weeks, graduating in October. There's very, very few jobs out there for the summer months for students going back in September. A lot of people haven't realised they can't just head off interrailing or go on a J1 for a few weeks, and walk into a job for the rest of the summer to pay for their living expenses in the next college year.
As for graduates getting jobs in their field of study, again, it's pretty bleak. Most people are just staying in college, doing a postgrad, or heading off travelling for a year, but I would guess around 40-50% of 2008 and 2009 graduates will be unemployed whenever they actually try to get jobs. In my own area (law) there's very few jobs in the big Dublin firms, so everyone is trying to get into a postgrad for the next couple of years, or are just signing on.
Students have been insulated from the recession over the past academic year, but reality will hit them hard over the summer.

If you are a law grad, do not worry. Lenihan will create plenty of work in the Field if NAMA is set up.

Aren't the figures "seasonally adjusted" to allow for students and teachers in temporary positions signing on while casual workers in the tourist industry sign off?

You can apply for job seekers allowance, you need a letter from college stating you are finished your studies. The amount you get depends on your circumstances , if you are under 24 and live with your parents its means-tested on their income. If you live with your partner\spouse you are means-tested on their income .
