Easy it has to employ more people to take account of the fact that the sick leave is so high.

Dismiss the malingerers and probably cut thousands from the workforce.....saving the taxpayer money.

An analysis of time off sick v overtime pay per employee might be interesting going by a previous posters comment also

Anyone care to take a stab at how much it equates to in payroll roughly, including perks?

I think I unwittingly found a way to kill a thread off - ask a hardish maths question

I'm going to attempt a crude estimate of this - using a round number of €40k per employee (everything included, all-in) - as the average - and taking mccaffertycat's estimate that these lost hours equate to 4,500 people. Thats €180m.

Even taking 30k as the average its €135m

    At €50k average its €225m

Add to this excessive wages & management at the top and a massive administration in the middle and its no wonder we are where we are with the HSE. Why aren't Harney or Drumm tackling these issues as urgent priorities?

Its has been rumored that front line staff are not immune to the bugs their patients stuff from and that not all hospital are well lit, airy and well designed from a cross infection point of view.
Patients get bugs in hospital, staff move around more and get even more bugs. Whats the mystery?
Bad conditions also increase back injuries and depression.
I know that it is easier to believe that most people who work in the health service are useless wasters, dont let the facts get the way.

Which would totally explain why caterers (who presumably work mostly in a clean environment) are out sick more than nurses (who have much more direct contact with sick patients).

just on the news plans by HSE to cuts jobs including 700 staff nurses. That should add to the stress on the existing nurses.

It is interesting to see how the HSE compares to other departments:

Almost all major public sector employers have higher absenteeism rates than the private sector

Absenteeism rates across the public sector
