Quinn Healthcare dumps healthcare cover for St Patrick's Hospital

Quinn have sent out letters to their customers stating that they are no longer doing business with St Patrick's & St Edmundsbury hospitals. Where this leaves their customers who are users of those hospitals is unclear. No warning was given to patients/customers beforehand. The letter, dated 16th March says that cover is stopped from the same date so patients already in the hospital covered by Quinn presumably had to leave that day, if they were unable to make alternative arrangements.

This is another blow to care of those with mental health problems - a sector already miserably underfunded and neglected.

If the cover for customers already patients in the hospital was revoked then this should be made a much bigger story and Quinn should be hammered for it.
Even to continue care in St Pat's or St Edmundsbury's would be a HUGE fianacial burden of those who could afford it, and impossible for others.
Also, given the fact that the alternative for many would be the likes of St. Ita's... !

Do you have a link for this, bloc?

An alarmed older relative showed me the letter they received yesterday - suffers severe bouts of depression since her husband died and goes to St Pats occasionally. I have to find out exactly what it all means this morning. It reads like this:

'I am writing to you to make you aware of a change in our hospital listing.

We recently entered into negotiations with St Patrick's & St Edmundsbury hospitals to renew our contracts.

Regrettably, despite intensive discussions, it has not been possible to reach a agreement on your behalf with St. Patrick's hospital. With effect from the 16th March 2009 Quinn-healthcare will not be in contract with St Patrick's hospital or St Edmundsbury hospital.

We want to assure you that our Team is onhand to provide addistance to you in any way possible in the event of you having queries or questions regarding this decision. Please feel free to contact us on 025 35507 should you require further information on th alternative facilities available to you.

I assume they must have some sort of interim measures for people actually staying in the hospital at the moment - surely they won't have been turfed out? There would be a lot of people on outpatient treatment programmes too. It really doesn't bode well for Quinn by the look of things.

Just checked with St Patrick's - people staying in hospital are covered but no new admissions for Quinn customers or outpaitents. Stampede to VHI...

Amazed there isn't more about this in the media though - sounds like they're going down. The suddeness of it is very suspicious.

Still have these up as full cover for all

Bottom line : its too expensive. So private healtch care bodies will have to withdraw. Harney must be devestated...

I've always been... sceptical about the whole Quinn phenomenon anyway.

I read somewhere a while back that there were/are quite a few sharks circling around Harney's generous incentives for private healthcare stuff - all sorts of bonzos with no experience of the sector suddenly developing an interest and attempting to clamber onto the gravy train...

Harney is chucking money at these people while threatening to sue old age pensioners for fraud...satire is well and truly dead.
