Baxter: Product contained live bird flu virus

By Helen Branswell, THE CANADIAN PRESS

The company that released contaminated flu virus material from a plant in Austria confirmed Friday that the experimental product contained live H5N1 avian flu viruses.

And an official of the World Health Organization’s European operation said the body is closely monitoring the investigation into the events that took place at Baxter International’s research facility in Orth-Donau, Austria.

“At this juncture we are confident in saying that public health and occupational risk is minimal at present,” medical officer Roberta Andraghetti said from Copenhagen, Denmark.

“But what remains unanswered are the circumstances surrounding the incident in the Baxter facility in Orth-Donau.”

The contaminated product, a mix of H3N2 seasonal flu viruses and unlabelled H5N1 viruses, was supplied to an Austrian research company. The Austrian firm, Avir Green Hills Biotechnology, then sent portions of it to sub-contractors in the Czech Republic, Slovenia and Germany.

I opened a thread on this a few days ago. Nobody seemed interested..

I find it interesting that for years virologists have been saying that for H5N1 to mutate into a virus that was capable of crossing from human to human it would have to be present in the body of the host at the same time as the regular flu virus. Here we have a pharmaceutical company that mixed LIVE H5N1 with the regular flu virus, put it in "vaccine" products and sent it all over the fu*king world.

Does that mean if someone got injected with this stuff it would have created a new strain of bird flu that would have gone pandemic?

If so, that was a very very close call to a Catastrophe.

As far as I know they still haven't accounted for all the contaminated stuff they have sent all over the world. Essentially all they have done in response is do a "ooops, it was an accident", "it's no big deal" routine.. The only reason that this was found out at all is because a Czech scientist didn't take their word for what was in it and did tests.

No. That possibility would have been very very unlikely. Possible, but chances are very slim.
The usual route for an avian flu virus to mutate into a human flu virus is for a third vector like a pig or domestic poultry to transmit it to humans.
Ireland interests are best secured within a more dynamic EU. Vote YES to Lisbon.

H5N1 (avian flu) doesn't easily infect people, H3N2 (common flu) viruses do. If a person is exposed to a mixture of the two (H5N1+H3N2) is simultaneously infected with both strains, then that person could serve as an incubator for a hybrid virus that would be easily transmittable among people. Do you get it?.

Baxter mixed the two and put them in a "vaccine" product. As far as I know there has been no recall and there is no information as to how many batches were sent to Baxter's various subsidiaries and sub-contractors that are still unaccounted for.

This is like a controlled demolitions company being caught planting explosive in the World Trade Centre and then claiming they made a mistake selecting the wrong building. Lets face it, the majority of the population can't see WTC1,2,7 were controlled demolitions so they won't see anything untwoard here.

This act could have wiped out half the population of the world but our politicians will still be sucking their thumbs and won't even notice.
Cowardice asks the question - is it safe? Expediency asks the question - is it politic?
Vanity asks the question - is it popular? But Conscience asks the question - is it right?
And there comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular;but one must take it simply because it is right. -MLK

The problem with that theory is that the H3N2 virus seems to be inactivated, or as with many vaccines probably just a small part of the virus itself. As far as Im aware in order for a hybrid virus to emerge, one would need to be infected (ie both viruses multiplying simultaneously) with both not simply innoculated with both.
