Harney "serious health cutbacks inevitable"

Here we are
RTÉ News: Serious health cutbacks inevitable - Harney

The Minister for Health has indicated that serious cutbacks in health spending are inevitable next year.
Mary Harney said the challenges facing the Government are immense and she urged a great national effort to tackle the crisis.
Speaking on 'The Week in Politics', Ms Harney said the cutbacks were the result of the deteriorating economic situation.
Well, shes on a mission that one...
At least she didnt say "desirable", which I guess is what she wanted to say. Or "at last" , or "thankfully" or "so that cough<brian>cough can get richer" or "my mates tell me to tell you".

Will she start at the top layers of flab and work down?.
Don't expect anything revolutionary folks.
Its only a chat, we ain't the world council.
In 2000 the Women's Institute in Britain gave Tony Blair the slow hand clap to demonstrate their contempt.
It was dignified, restrained and effective.Doesn't Bertie deserve the same scorn. No shouting, no abuse, no agression just a relentless slow clap whenever he speaks in public would be enough to end that man's presidential fantasy.

every dept and area of expenditure is going to face cut backs, why does anyone think that health will be any different ?

of course this is an ideal opportunity to cut a lot of the waste and fat from health (and other departments) but i'd not hold to much hope of turkeys voting for christmas...

That's true. Health spending has increased at a phenomenal rate over the last ten years; no serious person thinks that is sustainable, even without the unfolding financial crisis (though undoubtedly Liveline will be clogged up with people complaining that they have to wait longer to have their piles treated).

The news about Dell is gloomy, but reading the following article in the Tribune has made me feel a little bit optimistic. At least it now appears that the government are going to try to take a proactive approach, as opposed to the witless reacting to events we've seen heretofore. And an outbreak of realism appears to have occured amongst the social partners, including the unions.

Please dont tell me the florida trip is cancelled this year ?

Please god, are the off-licences going to have to open themselves ?

Are things really so bad that our 20 hardworking junior ministers and huge staffs are in jeapourdy.

I'll give up many things sir, but if anyone takes away my first-class travel theres going to be trouble.

Please go Harney.

Youve no party, no mandate, no crediblity.

Whereas we all know what will actually happen. Frontline services will go as neither she or the government are willing to take on the unions protecting the bloated health service.
