A&E on the verge of collapse?

A number of doctors and consultants have complained that the A&E sections of hospitals are on the verge of collapse. They blame the problem on drink and drugs, people taking too many of both. Cocktails of Viagra, Ecstasy and Crystal Meth. Fine Gaels health spokesman Dr James Reilly thinks we need a national debate on this, do we? Some might say that debate would be a waste of time and money. Some believe the problem will sort it’s self out. Said individuals think original problem was caused by the Celtic Tiger and all the money that came from it, now with our economy in decline there will be less money for people to get intoxicated on drink and drugs. Some believe that the problem in A&E will correct it’s self over time.

A friend of mine has had back pain recently. They needed a MRSI scan. If they wanted to go public they would have to wait for 4 months for the scan. But if they went to a private clinic they would have to pay 120 euro but could have the scan today and the results in two days.
Bearing in mind this person pays health insurance. Which did they chose?

The annual health budget is €16b. That's about a €4,000 per person spend.

I find it pretty amazing that this amount is not nearly enough (clearly) to look after everyone for free.

We have crack and meth epidemics predicted so its just going to get worse. Theres no changing it without the state standing up to "the international community",the pharmaceutical industry and the alcohol industry.

    Welcome to the third world.

I've had to visit A&E three times in the last ten years and each time it was full of very drunk but not that poorly looking members of our traveller community. Perhaps just a coincidence!!

Are you talking about a particular hospital or hospitals in general?

personally i believe that those whom end up in A&E due to drink of drugs abuse (themselves not the victims of attacks by drunks, etc obliviously) now i'm not talking about someone who's had a few drinks and slips and hurts themselves, more the people whom drink to excess and are falling down drunk and need to have stomach pumped or cleaned up after being so drunk they've mashed their face into the path repeatedly and are found lying in poors of their own urine / vomit,etc......

should be heavily billed for same, something in the region of E500 payable before discharge or E1000 afterwards, those whom don't pay get debt collection agencies sent after them.......

the point is not to raise revenue but to punish people (esp repeat offenders) and to hit them where it really hurts, A&E should be for people whom really need it not twits and scumbags whom can't control themselves and need to be taught a lesson the hard way....
