Reactionary vested interests in the public sector? Shocking!

Given that health care gets the biggest share of government spending,a topic on government is well placed in Health & Social Affairs. An Irish Times article today discusses the fallout from a government minister's claim that reactionary vested interests are entrenched in the public sector and well protected by trade unions. An excerpt:
"The motion followed an address by Mr McGuinness to the Beverage Council of Ireland's annual conference last Friday in which he described the public service as "now so protected by its unions that it has largely become a reactionary, inert mass at the centre of our economy". He also said the public service culture "destroys ambition, resists change, and is now so insulated from reality that information can be withheld from a Minister, unfavourable reports are doctored and answers to parliamentary questions . . . are master classes in dissemination and obfuscation"."

I'm sure he didn't say this without some background information. Maybe he'll tell us what he's not telling us.

Many departments of government are inept and managed by people who can't manage but got promoted anyway for their long service.

What's shocking is not what the minister said but that he would admit to it and not be sacked by the Taoiseach. That would have been a sacking offence under Bertie.
