Young woman has two young kids but is struggling with bowel problems. She is attending a main public hospital in a major city in Ireland. She is a housewife. She is a public patient. She has a medical card. She is looking for an appointment for over 4 months to see a consultant, having being referred for a further review by her local GP. Likely at some stage that she will have to have a colonoscopy - hopefully of the temporary variety. She needs an update / recheck. She is struggling to keep up her weight and she ain't got much to begin with. She would like the comfort of being seen, diagnosed and updated.
Had a chat and told her to go back to her GP and ask to be referred to a different consultant in a different hospital. She did and voila she is being looked after.
THE SHAME BIT
The other hospital is also Public and in the same major city - only a few miles from the first hospital referred to above. She is being seen though in a Private Hospital in the same city in the next 2 weeks. Neither Public Hospital can see her but only one is signed up to the National Treatment Purchase Fund!
Public Hospital 1 (bigger hospital): We won't sign up for the NTPF because we want all the revenue for all of our consultants and services - interpretation "who cares how long the patient has to wait - we only use our in-house services"
Public Hopsital 2: We have signed up for NTPF. We are overloaded with requests - interpretation 'patients actually matter'.
Private Hospital: We are in it for the money - interpretation 'greeedy capitalists but they supplement existing services and they contribute to better overall patient services'
This is a true story told to me by an extended family member. Hopefully all will go well.
QUESTION
Why are public hospitals opting out of the NTPF and delaying patient care, service and treatment! Some patients who could be referred to the NTPF are waiting in excess of 3 years in some hospitals in this country.
