    The Morning After Pill

    Hi folks,

After a recent 'accident', the girlfriend and I were forced to get an emergency appointment with a GP on a Sunday morning in order to be prescribed the morning after pill. While the GP herself was lovely, cordial and extremely helpful, should the morning after pill not be available over the counter?

What are the various party positions on the issue? And, does anyone know if any legislative initiatives are pending?

    Which is a different country.

Personally I think it should be available over the counter but it's quite the hornet's nest with extreme religious groups etc.

It's not just a religious thing. Female friends of mine have told me that it's unhealthy to take the MAP on a frequent basis, and for that reason it's good that it's not too easily available.

On the other hand, trying to find a doctor at the weekend can be a difficult and stressful experience, and I suspect that a lot of the opposition to having the pill available over the counter would come from the medical profession unhappy at losing lots of easy money

    No it's not.

Presumably the science bit behind the morning after pill is something similar to the ordinary contraceptive pill - but then I suppose religious types have a problem with that too.

Its the fact that the morning after pill can cause a fertilised egg to die, which many people consider murder. But this argument´s been had a dozen times on p.ie already and there´s drinking to be done, so I´m outta here!

(It should be available in Spar at 9am on Sunday mornings in my opinion, as its effectiveness rapidly decreases with each passing hour..)

I think it is...vaguely remember a nurse telling me two doses of the normal pill did the same job.

There is some sense in having it not too easily accessible as surely that would encourage promiscuity and "unsafe" sex.

It you need to have the MAP on a regular basis then the person might need to get sex education classes and learn how to use contraception. Go on the pill or get the jab or use extra thick condoms etc.

Of course if the FF/PDs didn't close the family planning clinics and sell them to their business friends who in turn sold them for re-development making massive profits it would be far easier to get the MAP. But it should be available from any chemist or A&E and then you can go to your Dr after if needs be.
