What sort of kids are we rearing?

What sort of kids are we rearing? Where do they get their sense of entitlement from? It’s great to see them have more self-confidence than earlier generations, but some of the visible traits (thankfully not universally applicable) should be a cause for concern.

On Sunday, my brother told me that his 17-year old is taking driving lessons in confident anticipation of getting a car for his 18th birthday, despite his father’s repeated assurances that it won’t happen, they can’t afford it. ‘Cos some of his friends have, or are getting, cars.

On the DART yesterday, a young girl a couple of seats away from me answered a call on her mobile. She shouted loudly enough for everyone to hear that she was changing schools, going into 5th year, and her father was talking to her about some options.
“No, I told you I wanted to go to The Institute”, she shouted.
    “It’s not 8, it’s only 7 grand. That’s ok!”.
Then she hung up on him.
When I was getting off, I asked her to take her UGG-booted feet off the seat. If looks could kill...

Here i think a massive contributor to the problem in society is the, TV.
Im not old fashioned or anything but i think we should minimise childrens exposure to TV.
I have a wee girl of my own, and big girl of my own (my wife) i tried to have a normal conversation last night with them, i couldnt. Holyoaks was on. it was on on 3 stations, one show after the other. the wee girl is only 2, but imagine the subconcious ruination thats happening to her mind already. The big girl, then switch to eastenders and then after that to "greys anatomy??". So you could say there was no conversation of any importants that night. Oh, and i had the dinner in front of the TV as well. no choice in the matter.

materialism has stole the heart and soul of every one in this country and its only getting worse. Family values no longer exist.

That's easy to answer: Selfish, self-centred, egotistical & oblivious to the thoughts and feelings of others. They expect everything to be handed to them on a plate, don't know what it means to have to work, save or wait for anything and expect others to wait on them hand and foot. They also expect to have the very best straight away and not to have to trade up to better over time.

There are some good kids out there but, sadly they are few and far between.

We have created a self-centered, materialistic, consumerist, greed based society. Children are quick learners.

Money grabbing, objectionable little f..kers, if you ask me, but, you say that to their mother and all you get is a stare like as if you’re a tight fisted old git yourself.

The women aren’t always wrong, you know.

A 10-year old nephew was having a couple of friends over to watch some dvds. He asked his old man if he could order take-away pizza for them. His old man said no, but we’ll get some good supermarket pizzas and zap them in the oven.

Naturally the kid goes to his mother for a second opinion, who says “of course you can” and he gets €35 worth delivered. Dad not too pleased to be undermined, but bites his tongue when he gets that same “tight fisted old git” look from his missus, who, after all, is only doing her bit to keep up with Joneses.

Kids are extremely good at playing one parent off against the other alright. If I had been the husband I would have taken my wife off for a few well chosen words away from the child. I would also have given the child a sanction for undermining me.
