The PNA members have every right to seek compo for the assaults perpetrated on staff members by clients.. However those working in hospitals with the mentally ill have security workers on the floor..
I work in a High Support Unit; no security.. The clients in my centre make a game out of assaulting staff.
I work with kids with behaviour issues in a residential setting.. I have had ribs broken from assaults, my nose broken, my spleen ruptured with no compensation from my employer (the HSE).. One of my collegues is partially blind because he had a cup of boiling water thrown in his face.. Another collegue resigned from the HSE because a client fractured her skull with a base ball bat... Like me, neither of my collegues got compensated.

I hope those nurses get a result, and I hope they will set a precedent case where Social care workers like myself can get some justice.

I honestly believe that if a study was done in relation to assaults of Staff members in the HSE, that Social Care workers would come out on the top of the list... The PNA members have security workers, the Social care workers who are dealing with the same(shared) clients have no back up... Social care workers have to restrain clients when they assault and the next day they are expected to do some therapy with the person they restrained.
