Emergency Contraception - Freely over the counter? Yes or No

Just wondering what people's views on should emergeny contraception been available from a pharmacy without the need to going to see a doctor first. Ireland is one of the few last countries in Europe where Emergency Contraception still requires a a doctors visit in order to obtain it. And please do not turn this in to another pro life and pro choice discussion.

    Sorry to be boring!
The regulator of the sector has stated that the only person that can apply for a POM to P (prescription only to OTC) change is the Licence holder, ie the manufacturing company usually.

That aside, I feel it should be available from pharmacy.

It's a tough one. Making it freely available can make people think "Ah sure I can always just pop into the chemist and get the morning after-pill" and then be a bit be more careless. I've heard of girls keeping a stock of them in their bedrooms. Why they don't just keep condoms or something I'm not sure...Despite that though, I think we might as well allow them to be given over the counter as it makes it easier and means girls don't have to go through the hassle of arranging a doctors appointment which in turn saves doctors time.

Surveys shows 75% are in favour of the morning after pill (Emergency Hormonal Contraception) being available from the pharmacist without a prescription, following a consultation with the pharmacist on its safe use. http://www.vhi.ie/news/n100108b.jsp

I disagree with it being freely available. The trip to the doctor's surgery makes people think twice about being careless again. It should not be seen as another alternative to contraception.

Considering many pharmacies don't open on Sundays, the morning after pill should be available over the counter in Centra and Spar.

No-one really thinks of it as an alternative to contraception - its a f*cking hideous thing that makes you feel like ************************ for 48 hours - even after a few drinks on a Saturday night, no girl is gonna think "ah let's forget the condom, I'll take the morning-after pill tomorrow, puke all day and take Monday off work to recover". I suspect those opposed to it on grounds that it encourages reckless behaviour, have never actually taken it.

And considering that you can take a trip to a few Centras and Spars, and buy enough paracetamol and whiskey to kill yourself, its f*cking ridiculous some of the stuff you need prescriptions for, like dandruff shampoos!

No it's not. It should be freely available. Making people 'think twice' can be used to argue against any method of artificial contraception!
