Poll: Abortion in a United Ireland

What sort of abortion laws would you wish to see in a united Ireland?

    1. Southern abortion ban extended to the North.

    2. Northern abortion laws extended South.

    3. Something more liberal than either.

    4. A Eire Nua situation/Northern Assembly with the North deciding its own abortion laws.

    5. A unitary Ireland but with separate abortion laws North and South.

(Can somebody put up a poll)

There is a lot of talk here about changing flags and anthems, but this could be far more explosive as Ireland is reunited.

I would have a 2-state Federal Ireland, with each state free to determine its own abortion laws. Personally I would favour a more liberal approach stopping short of abortion-on-demand, but allowing abortion in cases of rape or physical threat to the life of the mother. I would keep partial-birth abortions banned however.

Abortion ban throughout the island of Ireland, with a Constitutional mechanism in place ensuring a referendum must take place if a question arises. This would ensure it could not be introduced by stealth if some lefties gain command of Government.
Marxists, Feminists and Leftists operate on the basis of "liberating tolerance" - i.e. their ideas should be tolerated, and any opposition should be suppressed.

Abortion to be allowed in all of Ireland with after care, but not abortion on demand......

By the time there's a "united Ireland" we'll be ordering babies onlines from www.babywow.ie.
The Mahon Tribunal found Olivia Mitchell to have received an inappropriate payment from Frank Dunlop at the time of the 1992 Election. F.G. Gael has taken no action against her.

Good point; this is the solution. I hope that Brown can see that to introduce the practice of abortion into the six counties would be a bad idea. Haven't the last forty years seen enough heartbreak and killing?

Yup, option 3, not our current hypocritical attitude.

I would favour a situation on both sides of the border where the deliberate, intentional and direct destruction of a foetus is illegal.

I would also favour a situation where medically-necessary interventions to save the life of the mother, which indirectly result in the death of the foetus, would be permitted.

None of these options would stop a single abortion. Women would simply go to England the way they do now.

All these cosmetic "bans" do is make it harder for women, and generally kick them while they are down. Of course the wealthier and better connected a woman is the easier for her to access an abortion in Ireland.

So all this mealy mouthed nonsense about protecting the unborn is actually just punishing poor women from deprived backgrounds.

    Shameful.

It never cases to amaze me how often people poke around looking for things that they think divide the Irish. Suggesting different laws in different places is infantile. The logic of that is to have different laws in each parish.
Obviously when the border goes, a poll would be the best option should it be required.
I can change my avatar again - but I must stay good- and play the ball not the man
