Construction Worker Killed At Dublin Airport

Construction worker killed at Dublin Airport
    Wednesday, 27 February 2008 11:19

A construction worker has been killed at Dublin Airport this morning.

Work on the construction site at the airport has been halted.

It is understood that the man is an employee of a construction company carrying out upgrading work at the airport.

It is unfortunate that workplace deaths are all too common place in this country.

What is even more unfortunate is the modern version of paying weregild to the courts, instead of a custodial sentence in cases where management and those responsible for H&S are criminally negligent. If dangerous driving carries a jail sentence, why not these cases? A cynical answer springs to mind, but I wont bore people with my theory.

(I'm not saying that those in this instant are, however.)

The fines given to companies who are in breach of health and safety is a joke.

Management are not always responsible for theDeaths and injuries caused.

You can never anticipate the stupidity of some workers.

I thought that the way it was announced on RTE's News at One on the radio was callous - after giving brief details of the man's death the news announcer said, "flights have not been affected".

Well PJ, if you read all the way down to the end, I say that I am not blaming management, I dont know what caused the death at this stage and to add to what I said, I would also apply strict sanctions to workers who cause death through reckless behaviour and flouting H&S law.

It seems callous perhaps, but necessary I suppose? Anyone flying today would have instantly been on to the Airport jamming lines wanting to know what was going on with their flight.

I never said you accused me of anything, I was simply referring to the kid gloves treatment that seems to be applied to many of those responsible for work place fatalities.
