There isnt sufficient staff to cover a full service at weekends. Even assuming a move to a 5/7 working week for those who dont already do it, it would mean a reduction of levels during the week if staff worked Sat & Sun as normal days.

The HSE needs to be designed from the bottom up - based on patients' care needs BUT based on a realistic budget.

Politicians need to be kept well and truly OUT of the process - all decisions need to be made on a clinical effectiveness and value for money perspective and budgets need to be allocated on a 5 year basis.
What's required is for the State to stop spending huge amounts of money on private services/ temps/nurses etc and to invest in beds and nurses/healthcare staff directly.By all means let this be overseen by an independent authority. But that would require a complete change in ideology from FG.

They'll never sort it out. FG don't want to sort it out. They want a private health system.

exactly , does anyone really think the blueshirts or other vested interests such as the insurance and banking in this country wants the HSE to work as it should .

Hse should cancel all holiday leave over the christmas period and look to spread leave evenly over the winter months of november to february.

It is rediculous that most workers were allowed take leave days during the busiest period of the year.

Same happens every year. They take 7 -10 days between bank holidays/ weekends and annual leave. Frontline is left with skeleton staff.

Hey presto... the following week the whole system is backed up.

I know for a fact supermarkets dont allow holidays during christmas period.

Except it doesn't, which is part of the problem. Some hospitals have consultants 50% idle while others are 150% utilised.

The model is based on legacy jobs in legacy hospitals with TDs joining protests if the HSE so much as think about making any changes while the unions and IMO leap on every opportunity to explain to a patient Fergal Bowers how hard their lot is.

Meanwhile the tax payer is funding 1,000 new doctors a year to head off to become plastic surgeons in Cali while the HSE scours the countries with the worst medical schools to recruit doctors who can barely speak English.

Just like they want a private social housing system...there's a bit of a trend here.

It would seem that public service is only good when there's money to be made in by select members of the private sector.

The fact is health care is a product if you want to supply it more effectively then it needs to be treated as such, calling it a right then folding your arms thinking it then automatically works itself out is a proven failure as is simply throwing money at the problem Ireland is proof of that if you look at health spending percentage in relation to GDP and compare it with other EU countries. Put those who have experience in providing services in this case health care for profit where efficiency and quality are necessary to just for a basic functioning but for survival due to competition then you will see a change. But reality is the whole approach need to be rethought, get rid of the ideologues and bring in those with brains and experience preferable from the private sector because they have no problem being told what to do and how to do it and are happy to get on with the job.
