Potential ban on youth drinking a boost to illegal drugs?

Justice Minister Lenihan's study of a potential ban on youth drinking until age 21 should consider the risk that this ban could boost drugs consumption.

An English newspaper reported that a line of cocaine there is cheaper than a pint. If the cocaine market here receives a boost to demand from a ban on youth drinking, this increased demand could allow drug dealers to lower their prices and still make more money.

Drugs are now readily available even in many rural villages all over Ireland.

This talk of a drink ban for under 21s, is a complete nonsence. I listened to Lenihan on Saturday afternoon radio, and he distanced himself from it, he said that is was one matter which had been suggested. The idea that he is actually in favour of it is ridiculous (he is way too sensible/politcal/ambitious for that). And even if he was, there is zero chance of it getting through cabinet.
We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns — the ones we don't know we don't know.

Will drugs abuse increase after an under 21 Alcohol ban?

You mean even more than it already is? You seem to think that if a 20 year old cant get a gargle, they'll get a line of coke instead. Problem is they are already getting their coke anyways.
Raising the age limit will make no difference to drug consumption. Substituting one drug (alcohol) with another drug (cannabis/coke) will do nothing to alleviate the effects of drug abuse.

Raising the age of dispensing alcohol to over 25 years of age would be a better route to go, imo.

Introduce an alcohol consumption licensing system!

Like the driving one, petty related offenses accumulate 2 or 3 points and bigger offenses lead to an immediate ban of the offender entering or purchasing alcohol from licensed premises.
So when are these so called intellectuals going to make their mind up???
