    Middle Class Drug Abuse

Anyone read the book by Justine Wilson Delaney on the level of middle class drug abuse in Ireland. What solutions are required in order to reduce the level of drug abuse in Ireland or should the government take a more libertarian approach and legalise all drugs on a gradual basis starting with cannabis and ecstasy. Its a great book but personally as a former cannabis user myself I am not shocked at the level of drug abuse in Ireland. RTE are running a two part series on the 1 and 8 November highlighting middle class drug use in Ireland.

Are you sure? On my t.v it says that Prime Time has been on since 9.30 on RTE1 and Grey's Anatomy (just spotted a very attractive red headed doctor :P) on RTE2 since 9.

I haven't read the book, but I say legalise. Collect the tax and take the money out of the hands of criminals who are killing each other for the sake of a couple of grand. Lots of drugs are legal at the moment, and you would be hard pressed to find a drug that is more detrimental to society than alcohol.

However, this is a mere pipe dream unless there was a similar move from other countries. There won't be any time soon, so the point is moot really.

    Hurrah for the status quo.

Thats a point that I've made many a time in relation to the damage which alcohol causes in so many different forms. Unfortunately many of the people who oppose the legalization of drugs such as cannabis have never tried them and think that they are the most dangerous things on earth and that they turn people into raving lunatics, which is clearly not true. While at the same time those people think that it is far less damaging and dangerous for them to sit down and drink a bottle of wine or two on any given evening. Strange reasoning if u ask me.

And before the "drugs are baaaaad" crew kick up, I am not talking about an all out legalization of drugs. Say for example in relation to cannabis, there could be some sort system brought in where by license holders would be allowed to grow 2/3 plants and there would always be the possibility that local Gardaí can make random checks to ensure the laws are being adhered to. The tax revenues on licenses, equipment and seeds would be massive. If legalization of other drugs was on the cards then similar systems could be used. I don't want to take the thread off topic so here's a link to the other thread where this was discussed before:

p.s: I realise I have taken the thread off topic slightly already and apologies for that!

It’s a good argument to put forward but if this was to be done it would have to be done in most other countries around the world, otherwise Ireland would just become a safe-haven for international drug dealers wanting to export the cocaine.

At the same time, the Coca production county’s governments would need to nationalise much of the coca farms as well as the cocaine refineries in order to remove the profits from the drug cartels. Inevitably the production system would be just privatised quicker than anything if this were to happen. Then the money generated would be taken from the countries producing the cocaine and into the bank accounts of the Wall Street “fat cats”. Thus provoking further upset & violence in the regions.
