It seems we're slowing down slightly in terms of baby popping, but we're still near historic highs for this country.
No. of babies born in 2nd Quarter of 2011 was around 2% down from the same quarter in 2010 but still 20% higher than in 2002.
The average age of first time mothers is just under 30.
Amongst the more interesting stats:
Around 1/3 were born to unmarried mothers but over half of these babies were born to unmarried parents living at the same address (I bet welfare will be interested in this anyway.)
Limerick City had the highest number of births to unmarried mothers at around 47%. As a Limerick man I'm going to try put a positive spin on this and state that this statistic shows we are very socially liberal here.
Five girls aged 15 and under gave birth, one of them to her second (well done you! How prodigious.)
Big families are on the decrease but still some 217 births, out of a total of 18,318, were to mothers who already had 5 kids or more.
77.2% of births were to mothers born in Ireland. Number of births to accession state mothers is holding steady at 10.6%. The comparable figures for all of 2009 were 76.2% to Irish born mothers and 10.3% to accession state mothers.
This was the discussion on the 2009 figures
In 2009, 24% of all births in the State were to women born outside Ireland
Overall there was some 11,000 more births than deaths in this period so we're still enjoying a natural increase.
