Clare Daly TD Socialist Party - Private Members Motion to Legislate for X Case

Legislation to provide for limited access to abortion will be introduced in the Dáil next week.

The legislation, to make abortion legal where there is a “real and substantial risk to the life” of the pregnant woman, will be introduced by Socialist Party TD Clare Daly in private members’ time and will be voted on in the House on April 19th.

Over 60 organisations and individuals - including seven TDs, two Senators, trade unions, academics and doctors - have called for “immediate legislation in line with the 'X' case.”

I thought we already had this?

The reason I say this is due to the fact that after our first son died from a genetic disorder, when we eventually got pregnant again we went for amino in the Rotunda, and we had discussed with our medical team a termination, if the same disorder was present.

We were assured that the termination would be carried out in Ireland, under the law, which was verified by the referenda over the years.

I have my notes from the time, but I am pretty sure that was the situation.

It is happening in a practical sense.. but not legislated for.. leaving the medical team in a very grey area.. it's about time the political system faced up to this anyway.. the people have spoken for this on more than one occasion now

It has never been legislated for - governments have dodged it for 20 years

Expect comments along the lines that Daly's Bill is badly drafted and that it is jumping the gun on a process that the government has already initiated.
