I agree with Dr. Gerry Burke of Limerick Maternity and having experienced the situation at first hand yesterday I believe it is inevitable that at some point these cuts will cause the deaths of patients.
The A&Es in Ennis and Nenagh were closed in April 2009 by the former FF/GP Government nearly two years before the current FG/Lab Government was elected.

Pardon me hammer but WTF? Where do you suggest the hospital puts the "delayed discharge" patients if a significant number of them are waiting nursing home placement?
Why did Minister Phil Hogan drop the independent review into planning irregularities within Dublin and Cork city councils and Carlow, Meath, Galway and Cork county councils ?

This is the default condition of most ED's these days. Hell I get stuck in them for hours because there is no trolley for my patient and I can't really dump them off my ambulance trolley onto the floor. It's not uncommon for 5 or 6 ambulances to be stuck in a single ED for hours.
I'll settle for a centre of competence anyday. Picket Noonan's house. It's just across the road from the hospital.

I`ve been reading about "bed blockers" ( apologies ) for about 5 years now. Surely some action could be taken to facilitate these patients. Funding for private nursing homes, fast tracking etc.........

A lot of ED's problems are self inflicted though, you go to the gp and your in and out in general in 15 minutes. Even if your gp suspects you have a serious condition he will book tests, as long as you are not a medical emergency.

How many people who attend a&e are actual medical emergencies maybe 15% ? but you could be 15 hours in a&e clogging up a bed for a non emergency situation waiting for tests....

How long would it take to convert NAMA hotels into private nursing homes?

About 80% of them bumped into a wheelie bin falling out of a pub.
