Who's drinking my share of alcohol?

How much do we drink? | Alcohol Action Ireland

Heard this on the radio this evening and it is also featuring on RTE news.

According to the report all adults over 15 drink the equivalent of 124 bottles of wine a year. I use the wine example as I don't drink beer. I drink maybe 12 bottles of wine a year.

In one of the places where I work an employee has been told by his doctor to lose weight and reduce cholesterol. He said at least he didn't drink a great deal. When I asked him how much he drank he said 8-10 pints a week. I suggested that was a lot and the others said no, it was about average. Apparently it is according to the report.

Not a healthy state of affairs.

You really have to live abroad for a while to really get an appreciation for the amount of excess drinking that happens throughout all generations in Ireland. (The UK doesn't count because they are as bad as us)

Indeed. But sure its all a big joke to us. The scale of drinking engaged in by teenagers/young adults is scary.

And that's our problem. I'm the same by the way.

There is a generational thing here.

My parents' generation have literally no concept of how much people my age drink. They cant concieve of the volumes involved

There must be some serious pissheads out there, I would have at most a pint a week so there must be people out there doing seroius damage to themselves.

If they want to see the return of illegal stills all over the kip and people growing there own weed on a much larger scale they are going the right way about it...

8-10 pints a week.....i know a good few people who would drink that on a Saturday afternoon/evening....

The sate of the economy will kill off excess drinking by itself as people find they don't have the money...
