'Magda' jets off to surfing hotspot Agadir on the taxpayers dime: Mail on Sunday

The Irish Mail on Sunday carries a two page interview with 'Magda', real name Gaia. They agreed to meet her at a beach for the interview and pictured her with her dog 'Nua'. During the interview she indicated that she was flying home to Poland for a holiday to get over the events of the week, she also told other locals that she was going to Poland. The Mail reporter offered to give her a lift to Dublin on his way back but she insisted on taking the local bus company service saying that she was going to stay with friends in Dublin before heading off. This seems to have twigged the journalist into believing that all was not right with her story. The Mail observed her at Dublin Airport but instead of getting a flight to Poland she in fact boarded an Aer Lingus flight to Agadir, Morocco - another surfing hotspot!

Under Social Welfare regulations you are allowed 'two weeks holidays' and still be in receipt of Jobseekers Allowance. However, you must inform the Department and get approval beforehand and even if she did so, if she told them that she was going to Poland but in fact was heading to Morocco surfing then the Department would have questions over her payment.

How does that change any of the facts? They gave the specific flight and even said that she was reading a book in the waiting area to board the flight.

It doesn't necessarily mean that the story is invented but it could do with some more reputable sources.

The woman shouldn't be hounded like that.

The Mail is verging on harrassment and invasion of privacy.

After the treatment she got from ordinary citizens right up to elected senators of the nation, you wonder why she might be afraid to admit where she is going?

    Questions over her payment?

The only questions here are about the taste and judgement of the Mail, thinking it has a 'gotcha' story on account of her taking a plane to Agadir rather than -20 degree Poland.

    Sad cases, them and you.

How exactly does he know what flight she boarded? He would have had to buy a ticket and follow her into departures to see what gate she went to.

So did the reporter or one of his tag alongs purchase an airline ticket so they could get through security to actually observe her sitting in the waiting area and boarding this flight to Agadir....and how did the reporter verify that she did not get approval from the Department?

Back in the time when AL was in T1....I frequently sat in the waiting and boarding area for flights to the US.....but that didn't mean that I jet setting off to the US!
