The true cost of the free medical cards for the over-70's ?

Are Ireland's cheapskate pensioners gobbling free Viagra, ag marcaiocht like billy-o, catching a dose and then leaving us poor taxpayers to foot the bill ?

THE INCREASED use by older men of drugs to reverse erectile dysfunction may be producing an unexpected side effect. The incidence of sexually transmitted diseases for men and women in the 50-90 age group has doubled over the past decade.
Cases of syphilis, chlamydia and gonorrhoea rose sharply during the 2000s, according to a study published this morning in the British Medical Journal .

The rate of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) has more than doubled among middle-aged adults and the elderly over the last decade......
One cause may be the increased popularity of erectile dysfunction drugs that have made sex possible for millions of aging men.

Aul' wans is right. Dirty aul' divils. Can nobody grow old gracefully nowadays? Mutton trying to be lamb. [Pity there are no figures for Ireland - those figures relate to UK?]

I blame it all on this guy. Everybody thinks they can be a minor Hugh Heffner:

You do bloody well realise that all those over 70's were here during the times when tax rates were 60%!?! They have PAID for their medical cards many times over!

We went through our young years being told it was a sin and that we would burn in hell for it.

We were told if we took self pleasure that we would go blind or it would fall off.

After going through all that and now having the chance to make up for lost opportunities we are accused (once again) of being a burden on the state.

Maybe they (the government) should consider putting us down. Would that suit bagel?

    Yes, i do.
Between paye, prsi, youth employment levy and the aib bailout I paid in excess of 65% during that period.

There is a popular myth in this country that OAP's have more than paid their way.
People don't seem to realise that many of the current crop of OAP's spent most of their lives working in the home as housewives, as was the default situation in that era.
Perhaps 60% max of OAP's contributed to the exchequer.

Then, as apparently now, they spent a lot of time in the saddle.
