Sir Gerry Robinson extremely critical of HSE staff retirement scheme

Sir Gerry Robinson was on Newstalk this morning criticising the incompetent way the retirement of essential frontline staff has been handled by the HSE and the Department of Health. It's from 17.25 in the clip.

    "It's shambolic"

    "...certain services very hard pushed...."

"God you know if this was done in a private business, somebody would be hung"

Sounds like Taoiseach Kenny and Minister Reilly were defending the indefensible in the Dáil on Wednesday in response to Willie O'Dea's needling.

A very bad week for Kenny. His arrogance eventually tripped him up. The honeymoon's over and the shine is gone off him. It will be all downhill from here.

Er....one hesitates to interrupt Mr. Robinson when he is in populist anger mode...

But it is "hanged"....not "hung"....if we are referring to human beings rather than, say, curtains...

I think it's more of a "hung out to dry" type of thing. He didn't sound populist - he hit the nail on the head.

    Sorry GG,

But I think you will find that given that he was speaking, rather then writing, his grammer is 100% correct, particularly as he was speaking about a future event in the past tense!

I wish some of the non essential non front ine staff could be retired off like the many overpaid managers.

Senior HSE manager Paddy Burke was on the RTE news tonight commenting on the long delays in issueing medical cards. He said that one of the reasons for the delays was that the application form is complicated and that many come in not properly completed which can cause long delay. They are looking into 'changing the form.'

Now that form has been in use for years, and I agree it is overlong and testing even for someone who is in good health and well educated.

Have they JUST realised the form needs changing? Is it only now they are getting incomplete forms back? Do they not have a manager for review of forms? They have enough managers! Surely any organisation should review its forms regularly, and take heed of any form that appears to be giving difficulty to custonmers?

This was one of the landmines Lenihan joked about.

Setting a specific date and allowing them retire on pre-cut salary level was MADNESS IN THE EXTREME.

    HSE haven`t a f................clue.

We all know they "lose" the forms on purpose. Keeps the HSE under budget and means that they dont need to cut wages, expenses, overtime, entertainment etc...

    Wake up.

    100,000 cards a year - 52 weeks - 150 staff = 13 forms a week

If they cant manage that they should be SACKED

In this case yes, "hanged" would be incorrect

"Hanged" when we mean execution of criminals by hanging by the neck until they are dead. "The criminal was hanged" (not "hung").
